Three Years of the Syrian Crisis

Emergencies, News/feature, Syria, 2014

This week marks the third anniversary of the crisis in Syria. Since the onset of violence 140,000 people have been killed. Over 2.5 million people have fled to neighbouring counties. 9.3 million people within Syria are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.

Since the start of the crisis in 2011 Irish Aid have been working with our NGO and international partners to provide humanitarian assistance to those affected by the crisis.

  • Ireland has provided €20.311 million in humanitarian assistance in response to the Syrian crisis and pledged to provide an additional €6.7 million over the course of 2014.
  • Funds have been provided to 6 established UN partners, the Red Cross Movement as well as to a number Irish NGOs. This funding has been used to provide essential food, water, shelter, medical attention, education and protection.
  • Funding has also been provided to support refugees and host communities affected by the ongoing Syria crisis Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq over the next three years through a unique approach which bridges both humanitarian and developmental programming.
  • Ireland has dispatched 66 tonnes of emergency supplies including 12,000 metres of tarpaulin, 2,000 kitchen sets and 20,000 blankets
