Ireland's EU Presidency
During our Presidency, Ireland will work to ensure that the EU engages constructively and effectively in important international discussions that affect the world’s poor people and communities.
Working with partners for better development
From 1 January 2013, Ireland assumes the Presidency of the Council of the EU. This is an important period in international development as we look forward to the UN Special Event on the Millennium Development Goals in 2013 and the shaping of the post-2015 global development framework.
We will work closely with all of the key institutions of the European Union to ensure that our development co-operation Presidency programme is delivered successfully.
Our priorities
We will have a particular focus on three issues:
- Ensuring that the EU actively engages in development of the ‘post-2015’ agenda
- Highlighting the need to co-ordinate the international response to hunger, nutrition and climate change
- Forging stronger links between emergency humanitarian relief and long-term development aid
