The Our World Irish Aid Awards
Welcome to the Our World Irish Aid Awards
Irish Aid, Department of Foreign Affairs, is the Government’s programme of assistance to developing countries and was set up in 1974. Ireland's development cooperation policy is an integral part of Ireland's wider foreign policy. Through Irish Aid, the people of Ireland support development work in over 90 countries (€870 million in 2007).
For the past five years Irish Aid has run the Our World Irish Aid Awards for primary schools in Ireland. The overall purpose of the programme is to raise awareness among Irish pupils of the lives of children and their families in developing countries. By taking part, children can learn how Ireland works with these countries as partners for development.
This project can be presented in any medium (art, audio, video, text, etc.) The work needs to be carried out either by pairs, groups, a class or a whole school. Whilst it should be teacher-led, the more the pupils come up with their own ideas and make their own choices, the better. Third to sixth classes (Years 5, 6 and 7 in Northern Ireland) in all primary schools and pupils aged 7–18 years in Special Needs Schools are invited to participate.
The Awards culminate in an exciting awards day in Dublin where a national panel of judges selects the most impressive entries from schools countrywide. This year there will be a fantastic final event in Dublin Castle, where the most outstanding entries will be invited to attend and receive an award and will find out which school will receive the Our World Irish Aid Awards trophy!
