Millennium Development Goals

In 2000, 150 countries at the UN agreed to 8 Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). These are:

  1. 1 Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger;
  2. 2 Achieve universal primary education;
  3. 3 Promote gender equality and empower women;
  4. 4 Reduce child mortality;
  5. 5 Improve maternal health;
  6. 6 Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases;
  7. 7 Ensure environmental sustainability;
  8. 8 Develop a global partnership for development.

The Irish Aid Our World Global Schools' Awards programme aims to look at certain aspects of these goals and the current focus is GOAL 1: TO END EXTREME POVERTY THROUGHOUT THE WORLD. While the MDGs are also concerned with hunger, health, gender equality, education and the environment, they are all related to the central goal of the elimination of poverty.
