The Our World Irish Aid Awards

Welcome to the Our World Irish Aid Awards 2009

Over two hundred primary school pupils and teachers attended the awards day at Dublin Castle on the 26th January, 2010, which was introduced by RTE young people’s presenter Rob Ross.

The Minister of State for Overseas Development, Mr Peter Power, T.D., presented the fifth annual Our World Irish Aid Awards. Crehana National School in Carrick-on-Suir, Co. Waterford won the overall Our World Irish Aid Award for their project entitled Hunger in Our World.

Speaking at the Awards, Minister Peter Power said:
"I would like to congratulate the boys and girls of Crehana National School and their teachers on their well deserved award. The entries received this year from schools all over Ireland were extremely creative and well presented. They demonstrate the high level of commitment among pupils and teachers to working with developing countries and to making a difference in the fight against global poverty and hunger. The theme of this year’s competition ‘Hunger in our World’ helps to highlight the unacceptable reality that the number of people going hungry in the world is now over one billion."

According to the judges, the pupils of 3rd and 4th class in Crehana NS showed how tackling chronic hunger and food insecurity are critical to the achievement of all the Millennium Development Goals. Their project also highlighted the fact that everyone has a role to play in fighting hunger, whether through fairtrade, taking care of the environment or becoming aware and active on this issue. The judges described it as an extremely impressive project which showed a well-developed understanding of these global issues which connect our lives to the lives of people all over the world.

Crehana was one of the eleven finalists attending the awards ceremony.
