Minister Costello: Limerick playing a key role in marking Africa Day 2014

Development Education, News/feature, Ireland, 2014
Minister for Trade and Development, Joe Costello TD, today congratulated Limerick City and County Council for its work in celebrating Africa Day 2014.

Over the past week the Limerick City and County Council has organised numerous events including a writing and art competition, African drumming workshops, a keynote panel discussion entitled ‘Partners for Growth’, sports competitions, and concerts.

The celebrations culminated with an Africa Day Festival in the grounds of Limerick City Hall, Merchant's Quay on Saturday, 24 May. The festival featured a kids’ area, drumming workshops, an African Bazaar, and live music throughout the day.

Speaking ahead of the Festival, Minister Costello said:

“This weekend’s festivities provide an important opportunity to join with African communities in Ireland to celebrate our cultures and traditions. Promoting partnership means building mutual understanding and awareness of the diversity of Africa here in Ireland.

“I am delighted that Limerick, as City of Culture 2014, is playing a key role in marking Africa Day.”
