Information and questions to consider for volunteering overseas
Experience the developing world in Dublin city centre! Are you interested in exploring global development and human rights issues with your classes? The new Irish Aid Volunteering and Information Centre provides a dynamic learning experience for second-level students and their teachers. Through a hands-on and multi-media experience, school groups explore issues such as global poverty, aid, fairtrade, human rights, sustainable development etc and gain new insights and understanding of Ireland’s role in international development and the role that they can play as Irish citizens to help to create a more just world.
The Centre offers a schools programme for Transition Year, 5th and 6th Year and 3rd Year CSPE classes. Schools can book a visit to the Centre to view the multi-media exhibition on Irish Aid and participate in a facilitated workshop which explores development and the Millennium Development Goals. The workshops are led by experienced development education facilitators. Teachers will receive specially designed educational materials, including factsheets, posters, lesson plans and other material, for classroom use following the visit. Pre-visit teaching materials are also available. School visits are of 90 minutes duration and are designed for a maximum of 30 students, accompanied by 2 adults. There is no charge for these visits and Irish Aid staff are available to provide assistance and answer questions both in advance of and during the visit.
Teachers and students visiting the Irish Aid Volunteering and Information Centre may find the DevelopmentEducation.ie web site useful.
The web site, which is supported by Irish Aid, is a development and human rights education resource. It contains a broad range of materials exploring a variety of development issues and topics such as genocide and fair trade.
