One World Our World is a storybook for children in Ireland aged 10-12 which uses short stories to introduce five of Irish Aid’s nine programme countries in a lively and colourful manner that sets out to both interest and inform young readers. A children’s writer, Grace Wells, wrote the book in collaboration with Irish Aid.
The five countries featured are Mozambique, Tanzania, Lesotho, Ethiopia and Vietnam. Each country is portrayed through the words of a "child" who tells us about his or her life and their country in a way that attempts to bring out the diversity and richness of the individual countries, while still acknowledging some of the real problems that exist for ordinary people there. Facts pages on each country provide interesting information about development, culture, society and the environment.
The book is 26 pages with full colour illustrations throughout. Copies will be made available to schools, libraries and colleges of education throughout Ireland as well as to develop educators.
Although written as a storybook rather than a text book, One World Our World will relate to the Geography curriculum for 5th and 6th primary classes.
This is an initiative of the Public Information and Development Education Section of Irish Aid, which works to raise awareness of the work of Irish Aid among the Irish public and supports development education in Ireland.
Copies are available from the Development Education Unit in Irish Aid, Limerick or from the Irish Aid Volunteering and Information Centre, O’Connell Street, Dublin 1 |
